In the near future, a new factor may be considered – sustainable development.</p>
<p>Sustainable development can be defined as “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” Sustainable development considers environmental impacts, such as greenhouse gas production and depletion of nonrenewable resources, such as fossil fuels.</p>
<p>The term “carbon footprint” generally refers to the total amount of all greenhouse gas emissions (generally CO2) caused directly and indirectly by a given process, product, or event. When looking at the carbon footprint of asphalt pavement, for example, one can envision summing the amount of CO2 emissions from the extraction of aggregate at a quarry and the production of bitumen binder at a refinery, plus those associated with transporting raw materials, processing raw materials into finished pavement, constructing the pavement, and other miscellaneous activities associated with pavement production and maintenance.</p>
<p><span id="more-271"></span></p>
<p>A number of studies compare the energy consumption, waste produced, and environmental impacts from different pavement materials. These studies use environmental lifecycle assessments to make meaningful comparisons over the design life, taking into account raw material acquisition, manufacture, transportation, installation, and waste management.</p>
<p>Horvath and Hendrickson performed an economic input/output-based life-cycle assessment to compare an 11.8-inch thick HMA pavement with an 8.7-inch thick continuously reinforced concrete pavement (CRCP) placed on the same subgrade. The four-lane pavements were designed to carry 10 million equivalent single axle loads (ESALs). The study estimated that it takes approximately half of the energy per mile to produce the HMA pavements as compared to the equivalent CRCP pavement (0.93 million kW hr versus 1.85 million kW hr).</p>
<p>Other studies have used the life-cycle approach recommended by the Society for Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC) and the U. S. EPA.  This method tracks environmental flows or impacts upstream. For example, HMA would be tracked to stone quarrying and asphalt binder production, and asphalt binder would be tracked to impacts from recovering and transporting crude oil.</p>
<p>A Swedish study using this method indicates that it takes 36 percent more energy to produce a PCC than a comparable HMA pavement.3 A similar study conducted in the U.S.  found that using the same pavement sections used by Horvath and Hendrickson the HMA pavement required 21 to 92 percent less energy than the CRCP pavement, depending on the estimate used for the energy required to produce the asphalt binder.4-5 Why the big deal about energy use? Simply put, the more energy that is used, the more greenhouse gases are produced and the bigger the carbon footprint. This is the same concept used with warmmix asphalt (WMA) where fuel savings from lower temperatures result in reduced carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.</p>
<p>The energy consumed to produce an HMA pavement deserves a closer look. Asphalt production consumes 39 percent (using the high estimate) of the energy used to produce an HMA pavement, while heating, drying, and mixing the aggregates and binder uses 49 percent. All of the studies noted that a significant advantage of HMA pavements is the fact that they can be readily recycled.  The use of RAP in a mixture reduces the virgin asphalt demand and therefore reduces energy consumption.  Recycling rates for CRCP pavements are much lower, in some part due to the difficulty in removing the reinforcing steel. WMA technologies also have the potential to significantly reduce the energy required to construct an HMA pavement.</p>
<p>The studies also cited the need for a method to make routine comparisons. One such method is <a href="http://www.bfrl.nist.gov/oae/software/bees.html" target="_blank">BEES® 4.0</a> – Building for Environmental and Economic Sustainability – developed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).</p>
<p>BEES allows economic and environmental life-cycle comparisons for a variety of parking lot options. Figure 1 shows a comparison of the carbon emissions between HMA with conventional maintenance, PCC, and PCC with 15 percent of the cement replaced with fly ash. The comparison is based on typical PCC and HMA construction practices.</p>
<p>The environmental impacts for the HMA are based on a 15 percent RAP content.6 Maintenance for the HMA parking lot includes a 1.5-inch overlay every 15 years.</p>
<p>All comparisons used a haul distance of 20 miles.</p>
<p>Based on Figure 1, the PCC pavement options produce significantly more CO2, even when fly ash is substituted for cement. In the BEES analysis, HMA is preferred both economically and environmentally on a life-cycle basis.</p>
<p>Although the differences between HMA and PCC are significant during the construction of the pavement, construction impacts as a whole are dwarfed by the energy used and greenhouse gases emitted by traffic. One study determined that traffic levels of only 5,000 cars per day used 10 times more energy over a 40 year period than that used to construct the pavement.3 The inclusion of RAP and the potential fuel savings from WMA technologies allow for even greater reductions in the carbon footprint of HMA pavements.</p>

<p>The challenge now was on the timing of the Grand Opening, scheduled to be on July 4, 2009. Rocco Iadarola, a licensed StreetPrintXD applicator, received the news in early June. His crew now had to install more than 6,000 ft² of StreetPrintXD before independence day. <p>Iadarola Contracting has installed approximately 8,000 ft² of StreetPrintXD to date. Now that the project leaders have seen how StreetPrintXD performed throughout the tough conditions of the uncharacteristically heavy snowed winter of 2009, they have approved the installation of an additional 10,000 ft² of StreetPrintXD along some very high traffic intersections on Dock Street.</p>
<p>Iadarola also installed StreetPrint genuine stamped asphalt in low traffic areas like raised medians located right in front of the railroad station. StreetBondCL was used to create colored bike lanes along Dock Street.</p>

<p>The new faciliy is now complete and is now known as the Pearl Harbor Memorial Museum and Visitor Center. It will house an expanded state-of-the-art museum, a new research and educational center with a library and teleconferencing facility, an outdoor amphitheater, movie theaters for education and visitor orientation, an expanded book shop, and improved visitor space and facilities. The new facility has nearly doubled the size of the existing museum. The museum is designed to be the primary repository of artifacts and information related to the Attack on Pearl Harbor and the War in the Pacific. Th USS Arizona is aflagship for sustainable building practices. It has been constructed to attain LEED silver rating. The new buildings will actually use less energay than the ones it replaces even they are in total twice the size.</p>
<p>Construction included asphalt pathways throughout the  site  that were coated with <strong><a title="Solar Reflective Coating for LEED Credits" href="http://www.integratedpaving.com/our-products/streetbondsr/index.cfm" target="_blank">StreetBondSR &#8211; Solar Reflective coating for LEED Credits</a></strong>.   StreetBondSR facilitates Urban Heat Island mitigation by reducing the amount of solar energy absorbed by the pavement surface. The color chosen was Irish Cream which has an SRI of 37.   The SRI (Solar Reflectance Index) is a measure of a hardscape surface’s ability to reflect solar heat. Standard black is 0 and standard white is 100. StreetBondSR colors have an SRI greater than 29 and therefore qualify for the LEED® program under Section SS Credit 7.1 Heat Island Effect: Non-Roof. <blockquote><p><strong>&#8220;It&#8217;s cheaper to invest in it than not invest in it because the benefits that you get in term of obesity and diabetes, reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and traffic congestion and also costly petrol, it actually pays for itself by a factor of three to one,&#8221;  Spokesman Elliot Fishman said.&#8221;So it&#8217;s cheaper to do it than not to do it.&#8221;</strong></p></blockquote>
<p>Mr. Fishman says the plan would reduce greenhouse gas emissions by encouraging more people to leave their cars at home.</p>
<p>&#8220;We took a look at some of the international evidence about how cities had developed a strong bicycle culture and one of the key things they&#8217;ve done is develop on-road bicycle lanes that are physically separated from the rest of the traffic so that cyclists don&#8217;t have to contend with much larger and faster moving vehicles,&#8221; he said.</p>

Asphalt Concepts has been an IPC Accredited Applicators since 1993.</div>
<p><a href="http://www.integratedpaving.com/design-and-specify.cfm" target="_blank">IPC Design Services </a>supported the architect in creating the patterned paving design elements. Asphalt Concepts worked with the developer and ultimately provided a superbly crafted finished product; even assuring that the compass points were accurately aligned to north, south, east and west.</p>

<p>The concept was to revitalize the Overtown business district streetscape by incorporating traditional African tribal motifs in visually impactful ways that would appeal to both residents and visitors. <a title="StreetPrint - Genuine Stamped Asphalt" href="http://www.integratedpaving.com/our-products/streetprint.cfm" target="_blank">StreetPrint &#8211; genuine stamped asphalt</a>, was used to create 19 crosswalks from 9th Street to 14<sup>th</sup> Street along NW 3<sup>rd</sup> Avenue using a tile pattern and vibrant colors including: Coral, Green, Charcoal, Blue, and Yellow &amp; White. <a title="StreetPrint Genuine Stamped Asphalt" href="http://www.integratedpaving.com/our-products/streetprint.cfm" target="_blank">StreetPrint</a> incorporates IPC&#8217;s <a title="StreetBonb Colored Asphalt" href="http://www.integratedpaving.com/our-products/solarreflective-coating.cfm" target="_blank">StreeBond &#8211; High Performance Color Treament for Pavement Surfaces</a>.</p>
<p>IPC’s Accredited Applicator - Miami based <a title="Miami IPC Accredited Applicator" href="http://www.atlanticpaving.com/index.html" target="_blank">Atlantic Paving </a>installed the crosswalks. Rinaldo Cruz, the owner of Atlantic Paving describes the installation of this unique project. “The most challenging aspect was the exact geometric layout of each crosswalk due to the fact that each one is totally different. There are no two that are exactly the same as well as the color scheme made it very challenging for our coating crews who worked with up to 5 colors in the same area at the same time without walking on wet StreetBond coating!”</p>

<p>“Improving and expanding our transportation infrastructure is critically important to our economy,” said Lieutenant Governor Timothy P. Murray.  “Projects like these will not only benefit commuters but also the businesses that count on reliable service for their employees.”</p>
<p>&#8220;I am proud to support this project because it will revitalize one of Boston&#8217;s most important corridors and get shovels in the ground and people back to work,&#8221; said Mayor Thomas Menino. &#8220;My administration is committed to helping the MBTA connect our neighborhoods more directly to Boston&#8217;s financial district and creating more opportunities for our residents.&#8221;</p>
<p>In the first stage of the initiative, the Executive Office of Transportation will use federal recovery funds to improve Silver Line service with a direct connection from Dudley Station to South Station, including the addition of dedicated colored bus lanes on Essex Street and a new, state-of-the-art street-level terminal at South Station with lighting, seating, heaters, and countdown signals to provide additional comfort to riders.</p>
